This illustration is my take on a childhood hero of mine, Earthworm Jim. This was a request for Marco Mottura who contacted me via Twitter. I would have got round to illustrating Earthworm Jim eventually, as creator Doug Tennapel is a huge inspiration for my work, but that’s also why I’ve been in no rush to do it, it’s intimidating! So when the excuse came to make this illustration I took it on board as a challenge. Marco wanted the character Snot on the picture and it tuck a while to think of a situation where he could get involved. I haven’t seen the animated TV series in years and could not get a copy to watch, so for research I revisited the classic Megadrive game. That’s when the nostalgia kicked in. Brilliant game! Snot gets used for various reasons but the one that always gives me a chuckle is when he gets used a parachute.
I can’t recommend Doug Tennapel’s graphic novels enough. My favourite being GEAR. They are all short epics, but Gear in particular is so full of character.
